A nine-day trip to Machu Picchu, leaving from Lima and hiking the Inca Trail

Today, our MachuPicchuT representative will pick you up directly at your hotel in Miraflores to transfer you to the Lima International Airport, where you will take your flight to Cusco. Upon your arrival in the Andes, our local team will be waiting for you at the airport to give you a warm welcome and take you to your hotel, conveniently located just a few steps from the main square.

After checking into your room, we will have a fundamental orientation session. Here you will meet your official Inca Trail guide, who will give you a detailed explanation about the upcoming itinerary. During this meeting, you will receive your duffel bag (expeditionary canvas bag) so you can efficiently organize your clothes and the personal items that our porters will carry during the hike.

Exploration through the heart of the "Tawantinsuyo"

Known as the historical capital of the empire and the political and religious center of the Incas, Cusco is today a fascinating visual mix where huge walls of perfectly carved stone serve as foundations for beautiful Spanish colonial structures.

Once you feel rested, we suggest taking advantage of your free afternoon with the following options:

• A quiet walk through the center: Go to the "Plaza de Armas" to admire the imposing Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus. A few blocks away, you can get to know the local life of the city by visiting the lively and colorful San Pedro Market.
• The legacy of Pachacútec: If you feel energetic, you can explore the amazing temple of "Coricancha" (Temple of the Sun) in the city center, or visit the nearby monumental archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay on your own.

If you wish to add a formal half-day guided tour of the city and its nearby ruins, please contact us; we will be happy to organize this extra excursion for you.

After enjoying a nutritious breakfast at your hotel, our guide will pick you up in the morning to start the expedition. The first stop will be the imposing archaeological site of Pisac, where we will have a guided visit to explore its spectacular Inca ruins and its amazing terrace system. Later, we will go down in our van toward the town to tour its famous traditional market. Here you will have free time to admire the local textiles, traditional ponchos, and buy authentic crafts made by the valley communities.

We will continue our trip winding along the Vilcanota river, surrounded by impressive mountain landscapes and fertile corn and potato fields that show the undeniable beauty of the environment. Upon reaching Urubamba, a cozy town considered the agricultural heart of the Sacred Valley, we will take a strategic break. In this place, we will enjoy a comforting buffet lunch (to taste the exquisite Andean food) and a short break to recharge energy.

After lunch, we will return to the route admiring the course of the river until we reach the town of Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, you will be amazed by the mix of the imposing original Inca architecture and the overlapping colonial buildings. Our guide will accompany you through this extraordinary archaeological complex, which worked at the same time as an unbreakable military fortress and an elite religious center during the imperial era.

At the end of the guided visit, you will transfer to your hotel located in this same town. You will have the afternoon and night free to walk on your own through the Inca streets that still keep their ancient layout, an ideal setting to capture memorable photographs.

Today our hike to Machu Picchu begins. The start of the tour is located at kilometer 82 of the railway, so, after being transferred from your hotel, you will register at the government control point to take the first steps on this historical path. Throughout the expedition, you will cross breathtaking mountain passes that will test your endurance; the biggest challenge will be conquering the Warmi Wañusca pass (the feared "Dead Woman's Pass") at 4,215 meters of altitude, followed by impressive peaks like Runkuraqay and Sayacmarca, located at about 3,500 meters.

The tour through the Inca Trail is famous for revealing extraordinary Inca sites that can only be accessed on foot. During your route, you will explore amazing complexes like Llactapata, Runkuraqay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarka and the beautiful site of Wiñay Wayna.

Traveling through here implies crossing several unique microclimates. In the dry season, mornings are usually warm and nights very cold; while, in the rainy season, daytime showers are frequent, although warm temperatures remain in the sections of the jungle brow. Prepare for weather conditions that can change radically throughout the day.

On the other hand, you will not be alone in this challenge. Our team composed of an expert guide, a mountain chef, and strong porters will provide you with all the camping equipment and the necessary food so that your three nights in the mountain range are very comfortable. The porters will carry the heavy logistics during the entire route. In the early morning of the last day, the support team will say goodbye and return home by train, while you start the final section toward the "Inti Punku" ("Sun Gate") to have your first view of the citadel.

Logistical information of vital importance

1. Closing for maintenance: Keep in mind that the Inca Trail closes completely every month of February to perform conservation work and due to heavy rains. If you plan to travel on that date, we recommend the "Lares Trek" (3 days of cultural hiking interacting with local communities and 1 day in the citadel) as a safe, authentic, and fascinating alternative.
2. Changes in your participation: If you decide not to do the hike once confirmed, it is absolutely mandatory to inform us several weeks in advance. This early warning is vital to try to secure your traditional train tickets; otherwise, it will be impossible for us to guarantee this alternative transport option for free.

In the early morning of the last day on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we will say goodbye to our brave team of porters and cooks, who will return home after having made this feat possible. We will continue walking until we reach the famous Sun Gate ("Inti Punku"). From this privileged point, we will enter the citadel and have our first and impressive panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Once at the access control, we will start our guided visit, where our expert will tell the mysteries and characteristics of this architecture.

To guarantee the best possible experience and follow the current conservation rules, your tour will adapt to the following regulations:

• Complete exploration: The ideal and our main recommendation is to visit through Circuit 2, as it is the only official route that allows exploring the archaeological site in a complete, classic and very detailed way.
• Alternative routes: If the classic circuit is not available due to the very high demand from travelers, the visit will be done by choosing Circuit 1 or Circuit 3, which offer equally spectacular photographic angles and views of the complex.

Climbs to the Mountains of Machu Picchu (Optional)

After finishing the guided visit, the boldest travelers will have the chance to go up the peaks to see the majesty of the citadel from the sky. Keep in mind the strict access requirements:

• If you want to conquer the breathtaking stairs of "Huayna Picchu", you must mandatory book the ticket for Circuit 3A.
• If you prefer a longer route and go up "Machu Picchu mountain", you will need to have the corresponding access for Circuit 1A.

In the afternoon, we will go down to the town of Aguas Calientes. There we will board the return train to the Ollantaytambo station (or alternatively to Poroy). Upon your arrival, our comfortable private van will be waiting for you to move you safely back to your hotel in Cusco, closing this adventure perfectly.

After completing the demanding hike to Machu Picchu, it is key to dedicate one day to rest. Having a free day in the ancient imperial capital gives you the ideal moment to tour the city and discover what Cusco has to offer. So, to make the most of this valuable transition day, we suggest two different approaches:

Cultural and urban exploration
If you prefer a quiet day to regain strength and marvel at the local environment, the city offers endless options within walking distance of your hotel:

• San Blas neighborhood: Known as the artistic and bohemian district of Cusco. It is ideal for walking slowly through its narrow cobblestone streets, having a good coffee, and visiting the workshops of master craftsmen.
• Market route: Get to know closely the traditional aromas, colors, and flavors of the iconic San Pedro Market, or spend some time buying unique souvenirs at the large Artisan Market located on El Sol Avenue.
• Historical walks: Take a walking tour through the historic center to admire Inca temples with colonial mansions built on top, or explore the various museums that guard the legacy of the empire.

One-day adventures (Optional)
For tireless spirits looking to close their trip with an extra dose of natural wonder, we recommend taking one of the following full-day excursions:

• Colorful mountains: Challenge the altitude again by visiting the world-famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) or the fascinating alternative route of Palcoyo Mountain.
• Visit Humantay Lagoon: Take an invigorating hike toward the imposing Humantay Lagoon, famous for its turquoise waters guarded by majestic glaciers.
• Legacy in the valley: Choose a photographic route visiting the impressive salt pools of the Maras Salt Mines and the enigmatic Inca agricultural laboratory of Moray.

Today is your last day in Cusco, with a transfer to Cusco Airport or the bus station.

During your stay at hotels on the Inca Trail Trek (9 Days), breakfast is included starting from the second day. Breakfast is served as a buffet and includes fruit salad, juice, coffee, tea, bread, cheese, eggs, yogurt, hot water, and other items, allowing you to enjoy a nutritious meal before starting your daily activities. Our hotels are located in safe areas near the city centers of the destinations visited, making it easy and secure to walk around at any time.

Our representative will contact the hotels in advance and request that your room be ready upon your arrival, especially if you arrive before the standard check-in time. However, this cannot always be guaranteed. In such cases, you may store your luggage at the hotel and explore your destination while waiting for your room to become available.

During the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, we recommend leaving any extra equipment in the hotel’s luggage storage. Once you finish the trek, we will pick you up, retrieve your stored luggage, and transfer you to your assigned hotel room.

3 Nigths Camping

During the Inca Trail we spend three nights full-service camping, meaning that our camp staff will erect and dismantle the tents, cook, and do all camp chores for you: you need only carry your day pack. There will also be dining and toilet tents and bowls of warm water are provided both morning and evening for washing with.

Please note: we provide with filtered boiled water during entire Inca Trail, but if you like to use water from streams along the trail, you need to take some water-purifying tablets with you.
