Experience the Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail. Hike to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate for the ultimate view. A perfect mix of culture and iconic trekking.
Description
The Sacred Valley and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu are two of the most popular sites visited by travellers. The Sacred Valley is home to impressive Inca sites and agricultural terraces where the Incas cultivated crops such as potatoes and corn. The Inca Trail is part of an ancient network of roads built during the Inca Empire. Today, there are two main routes on the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu: the Classic Inca Trail (four days) and the Short Inca Trail (two days).
The Short Inca Trail is included in this Machu Picchu hike, where you will enjoy beautiful natural landscapes and important Inca sites such as Wiñay Wayna and Intipata. You will enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you may have the opportunity to see the sunset over the citadel.
The three-day tour from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu combines the beauty of the Sacred Valley of the Incas with the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It is the best option for those who have limited time, are not used to hiking or do not want to camp. This option also allows you to enjoy Machu Picchu twice: at sunset on the second day and at sunrise on the third.

Itinerary Details
Day 1: Sacred Valley tour
The Sacred Valley to Short Inca Trail tour begins today at 7:30 a.m. The first part of the tour covers the classic Sacred Valley and includes visits to Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Your Machu Picchu tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Pisac, our first stop.
During the tour, we will descend around 500 meters to explore the town of Pisac and its local market, where you can buy souvenirs to commemorate your trip. Then, we will continue to the Pisac archeological complex, which offers breathtaking views of the valley. During the guided tour, you will see areas used for residences, temples, and agricultural terraces, as well as other Inca structures. If you would prefer to spend more time at the artisan market than at the archaeological complex, simply inform your guide.
After Pisac, we will drive to Urubamba for a buffet lunch. After lunch and a short break, we will drive to Ollantaytambo. This Inca town is surrounded by spectacular scenery. Once there, we will walk to the Inca archaeological site, where you can marvel at magnificent Inca constructions. Highlights include the impressive Temple of the Sun, featuring huge, perfectly carved stones, as well as water fountains and locals wearing traditional clothing from the surrounding communities.
After finishing the Sacred Valley tour, we will take you to your hotel for the night.
Day 2: Short Inca Trail
The two-day hike to Machu Picchu begins with a pickup from your hotel in Ollantaytambo, followed by a transfer to the train station. There, you will board the train to Km 104, the starting point of the Short Inca Trail. Before beginning the hike, you must present your passport or reservation document at the checkpoint.
After checking in, you will cross a bridge to reach the first Inca site, Chachabamba. Then, you will continue with a four-hour uphill hike to Wiñay Wayna, an Inca site whose name means "forever young" in Quechua. Located at an altitude of 2,680 meters (8,793 feet), Wiñay Wayna is considered one of the most beautiful sites along this route. After the guided tour, you will have time to enjoy your boxed lunch or snacks.
Then, you will hike for about an hour and a half until you reach Intipunku (the Sun Gate), where you can enjoy your first panoramic views of Machu Picchu.
Finally, you will walk the last section of the Inca Trail to reach the viewpoint where you can take a photo of the ancient citadel. After a short break, you will descend to the main entrance and take the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night. In the evening, your guide will accompany you to a restaurant for dinner. You are free to relax for the rest of the night.
Day 3: Machu Picchu tour
Wake up early, and your tour guide will take you to the bus station. From there, you will take a shuttle bus to Machu Picchu. Once you arrive, your guide will give you your Machu Picchu entrance tickets. Today, visits are organized by Machu Picchu circuits. Depending on when you booked your trip, our sales department will send you confirmation of your circuit.
At the entrance, you will show your tickets and begin the guided tour, which lasts approximately two hours. Our experienced travel guides will provide fascinating insights into the culture and history of the Inca citadel. After the tour, you can take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes or book an additional experience.
There are two mountains at Machu Picchu. The most popular is Huayna Picchu, where you can climb at your own pace and take great photos of Machu Picchu. If tickets for Huayna Picchu are sold out, the next option is Machu Picchu Mountain. This mountain is higher, and from the top, you can see the Inca citadel, the surrounding mountains, and the Vilcanota River.
After your visit, you will return to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch on your own. Then, you will walk to the train station to catch the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Our Peru Xcapes driver will be waiting for you with a sign and will take you back to Cusco. They will drop you off at your hotel or Airbnb, and that will conclude our Sacred Valley to Inca Trail service.
