Paddington Peru: The Peruvian Bear Arrive to Machu Picchu

Paddithon in Peru

Excitement fills the air in London's Windsor Gardens, and for good reason - Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) has finally received his long-awaited passport! Now the big question arises: Where will his first adventure take him?

The answer arrives in the form of a letter from Paddington's homeland, sealing the decision. With bags packed and hearts full of anticipation, the lovable bear and the Brown family set off for Peru - the country where Paddington's story began.

The latest installment in the beloved film series, Paddington in Peru follows Paddington and the Browns as they immerse themselves in the rich culture and stunning landscapes of Peru. Their journey is a heartfelt tribute to the country's incredible diversity, showcasing vibrant markets, breathtaking mountain views and lush rainforests.

But their adventure takes an unexpected turn when they arrive in Peru and discover that Aunt Lucy, Paddington's beloved relative, is missing. The only clue is an ancient map that hints at her possible whereabouts. Determined to reunite with her, the group embarks on an exciting journey that takes them from the tropical depths of the Amazon to the towering peaks of the Andes.

As well as celebrating the universal themes of family, friendship and perseverance, the film highlights Peru's spectacular natural beauty and cultural heritage. Through Paddington's eyes, audiences are introduced to the wonders of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, the vibrant spirit of Peruvian traditions and the enduring charm of its people.

Whether you're a longtime Paddington fan or new to his adventures, Paddington in Peru promises to be a heartwarming and visually stunning story that reminds us of the importance of home, wherever it may be.

Paddington arrives in Machu Picchu

The statue of Paddington, installed in the Alameda Los Artesanos in Aguas Calientes, has quickly caught the attention of visitors passing through the city on their way to Machu Picchu.

With his signature hat, red coat and sandwich in hand, the beloved bear poses on a wooden bench near the banks of the Aguas Calientes River. The tranquil setting, enhanced by the gentle flow of the river, provides a charming backdrop for the bear, whose warm and inviting demeanor encourages tourists to take a photo.

This addition has not only become a popular attraction in the small city of Cusco, but also serves as a symbol of the cultural link between Peru and the United Kingdom.

Peru's Diverse Flora and Fauna

Peru's legendary diversity extends far beyond its rich culture, gastronomy, and history. Its flora and fauna are equally remarkable, making it a global biodiversity hotspot. Peru is one of the three most biodiverse countries in the world, with 80% of all animal and plant species concentrated in just 17 countries. Of the world's 117 known habitats, Peru is home to an impressive 84.

Home to more than 1,800 species of birds, 120 of which are endemic, Peru is a bird lover's paradise. It also boasts an incredible array of other wildlife: one in five of the world's butterfly species can be found here, along with over 380 species of amphibians, more than 390 species of reptiles, and around 500 species of mammals. Among them are some of the most exotic and fascinating creatures on earth.

The Andean Bear: Face to face with Paddington

Paddington, the beloved bear from the famous children's books and movies, is inspired by a real animal: the Andean bear. Found in the tropical Andes of South America, including near the iconic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, this unique species is the only bear native to South America and the only surviving member of the short-nosed bear family.

Weighing up to 170 kilograms, the spectacled bear is named for the yellowish-white markings around its eyes and face that resemble eyeglasses. These markings are unique to each individual. Meeting "Paddington" in the wild is a rare and special experience, as these bears are elusive, often active at dawn, dusk or night in the high altitude rainforests.

In the Andean cosmovision, the spectacled bear has spiritual significance, serving as a symbolic mediator between the world of the living and the world of the dead.

A Conservation Icon

The Andean bear is listed as Vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species, with habitat loss and human activities posing a significant threat to its survival. This majestic creature, which inspired the character of Paddington Bear, underscores the importance of preserving Peru's natural heritage. In Michael Bond's classic stories, Paddington travels from the Peruvian jungle to London, bringing with him a sense of adventure, curiosity and the vibrant spirit of his homeland.

With Peru's breathtaking landscapes and extraordinary wildlife, the Andean Bear serves as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our natural world-and an invitation to explore and protect it.
