Circuit 3 Machu Picchu: Great Cavern
Description
The Circuit 3 Machu Picchu is designed for a longer exploration of Machu Picchu. With this ticket, visitors can explore the lower part of Machu Picchu and descend to the Great Cavern of Machu Picchu. This area holds the secrets of the Inca citadel.
The Great Cavern or "La Gran Caverna" at Machu Picchu is a fascinating ceremonial structure located in the farthest reaches of the Inca site, beneath the mountain of Huayna Picchu. Believed to have been built in the late 15th century, this mysterious cave complex is part of the Temple of the Moon, a sacred site used for religious rituals. The caverns are intricately carved out of natural rock formations and feature altars, niches and finely polished stonework. The purpose of the Great Cavern remains unclear, but it was probably of deep spiritual significance to the Incas, serving as a place of worship and burial. Its secluded location and sophisticated design showcase the remarkable architectural and spiritual ingenuity of the Inca civilisation.
The Machu Picchu 3 Circuit Great Cavern is only open during the high season from April to August. It is closed during the low season. If you are planning to visit the Great Cavern at Machu Picchu, we recommend that you book in advance as there are limited places available.
