Colca Canyon Condor | Arequipa Canyon
Description
The Colca Canyon is located in the province of Caylloma, 165 kilometers from Arequipa and 40 km from Chivay town (the capital of the province of Caylloma). The highest point in the valley is the Ampato dormant volcano (6288 MAMSL). The lowest point is between the Colca and Andamayo rivers (970 MAMSL).
The Colca Valley has an extension of 100 km long and occupies only one sector of the basin of the Colca River, located between the districts of Callalli and Huambo. The Colca route goes through the slopes of the Cachani Mountain and crosses plains full of ichus and yaretas (Andean vegetation). You can find alpacas and vizcachas in this place, which are beautiful camelids of the area.
It is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca River descends from 3,500 meters above sea level at Chivay to 2,200 meters at Cabanaconde. The other side of the road to the Canyon is about 4,000 meters away. The grey mass of Sabancaya (one of the most active volcano in America) looms in the background, and its docile neighbor, Ampato. Unspoiled Andean villages lie on both sides of the canyon, inhabited by the Cabana and Collagua villagers. Some of the extensive pre-Columbian terraces fields are still in use.
