8 Must-See Tourist Attractions in Trujillo

With immense architectural wealth, it boasts various museums and dazzling urban environments. Also known as the City of Eternal Spring.

Known as the city of eternal spring thanks to its spectacular climate, Trujillo is a vibrant city full of tourist attractions to discover, from incredible archaeological sites to beautiful beaches characteristic of northern Peru.

1. Historic Center of Trujillo

Historic center with colonial buildings and people. Before exploring the best tourist attractions in Trujillo, a tour of the historic center is a must. With its beautiful and colorful colonial architecture, here you can visit the Trujillo Cathedral Basilica, built in 1666, as well as the famous archaeological collection at the Casa Urquiaga.

2. Huaca del Sol y la Luna

Giant mud pyramid in one of Trujillo's tourist attractions. The Huaca del Sol y la Luna were two of the most important structures of the Moche culture. These two amazing huacas were located in the urban center of the Moche people, and in the past were surrounded by slabs, houses, and streets where this great hierarchical society lived. Don't forget to visit the Huacas de Moche Museum, located very close to the archaeological site.

How to get to the Huaca del Sol y la Luna: The Huacas del Sol y la Luna are located just 6 kilometers southeast of Trujillo and are part of the so-called Moche Route. You can easily reach this site from the city center by taking a taxi or a bus at the Grau Oval. 

3. El Brujo Archaeological Complex

A clay archaeological complex in the city of Trujillo. A ceremonial center that tells the story of more than 5,000 years of human occupation, where vestiges of Peru's various ancestral cultures are found. Here you will find incredibly preserved figures in the murals of its pyramids. In 2006, the mummy of the Lady of Cao, a female ruler of the Moche culture, was discovered.

How to get to the El Brujo Archaeological Complex: It is located 60 km north of Trujillo along the Pan-American Highway North. From the city center, you can take a taxi to the complex. 

4. Chan Chan

Woman in front of the wall of the archaeological center in Trujillo. This is the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in the Americas and the second largest in the world. It was the capital of the Chimú kingdom and was composed of a total of ten citadels, including more than 100,000 workshops, pyramid temples, streets, and walls.

How to get to Chan Chan: The Chan Chan citadel is located just 5 kilometers from downtown Trujillo, making it quite convenient to arrive by taxi. 

5. Conache Lagoon

A vegetation-filled lagoon in the middle of a desert landscape. A treasure trove of biodiversity in the Department of La Libertad, Conache Lagoon is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with nature. The lagoon features spectacular flora and fauna, where you can observe beautiful carob trees, white herons, wild ducks, chiscos, among others.

How to get to Conache Lagoon: Conache is about half an hour from Trujillo, 14 km (8.7 mi) along the Industrial Highway. 

6. Huanchaco Beach Resort

Beach resort at sunset with a pier in the middle. Huanchaco Beach Resort is the ideal destination for surf lovers and those who want to enjoy the best seafood dishes in Peruvian cuisine. Here, you'll see spectacular sunsets from the pier, as well as the amazing totora reeds, up to four meters high, that decorate the entire beach.

How to get to Huanchaco Beach Resort: You can take a taxi from the city center, which won't take more than 20 minutes. 

7. Garden of the Senses

People in the middle of a garden. A feast for the senses, the gardens were designed to have a special impact on blind people, thanks to the fragrances and sensations offered by this beautiful natural space. An ideal setting to relax and take a break from the city.

How to get to the Garden of the Senses: It is located 15 minutes from downtown Trujillo, at kilometer 3.5 of the Industrial Highway to Laredo. Admission is 10 soles for adults and 5 soles for children.

8. Pacasmayo

Although not technically one of Trujillo's tourist spots, Pacasmayo is a charming and beautiful beachfront town that we recommend visiting if you are already in Trujillo. It is a small paradise of colonial-style mansions, cool waters, and strong winds perfect for surfing, as well as delicious dishes made with fish and seafood harvested by the locals.

How to get to Pacasmayo: Pacasmayo is located at Km 670 of the Pan-American Highway, 100 km from Trujillo. Buses depart from the Trujillo terminal approximately every half hour.
