What is Huayna Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu, also known as Wayna Picchu, is one of the imposing mountains that you will see in front of the citadel of Machu Picchu, Peru, being the classic image that defines this ancient Inca enclave.

During the hike to Huayna Picchu mountain, you will face challenging steep and narrow stairs, popularly known as the “stairs of death”. It is located in the majestic Andes mountain range, in the region of Cusco, Peru, like an eternal guardian. It is located in the province of Urubamba, about 80 kilometers northwest of the vibrant imperial city. Not really. If you feel that you cannot overcome your fear of heights, you might be better off skipping this mountain and choosing one of the other amazing short hikes you can have in Machu Picchu.

For example, you can opt for the hiking route to Machu Picchu mountain, or the hike to the Sun Gate “Intipunku”. However, if you can overcome your fear of heights, you can have one of the best experiences of your life.

Many people have experienced a change in their way of seeing things after reaching the top of Huayna Picchu. You will just need to be careful and respectful of mountains and extreme heights.

 

Huayna Picchu Entrance Rules for 2025

  • The Huayna Picchu ticket for 2025 has changed from previous years. It is now only available with Circuit 3, which allows visitors to explore the lower
  • part of the Inca citadel before climbing Huayna Picchu.
  • The daily entrance limit to Huayna Picchu has been reduced from 400 to 200 people.
  • In 2025, the Huayna Picchu regulations changed. There are now only two scheduled entry times: between 07:00 am and 09:00 am.
  • A guided tour of Huayna Picchu is not required. Visitors can climb the mountain on their own.
  • As in previous years, only individuals 10 years of age and older are permitted to enter.
  • The time limit for visiting both Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu is 7 hours from the time of entry.

 

At what age can you hike Huayna Picchu?

You must be at least 10 years old to hike Huayna Picchu.

For those traveling with young children, it is recommended to choose Circuit 1 or 2 to explore the Inca citadel. Alternatively, if you want to experience an amazing hike, the Machu Picchu + Mountain ticket is available.
